UPDATE: Antibiotics in Factory Farms

Just came across another article about the FDA’s interest in the amounts and types of antibiotics used on animals that are raised for food. This was written in the Wall Street Blogs Section.

I wonder why the FDA did not catch on sooner? In the article, it speaks of the worry that the widespread use of these antibiotics “fosters resistance in the microbes that afflict humans.” So basically now when little Sally gets an infection of some sorts…she is pretty much screwed because of all of the chicken nuggets she consumed throughout her life. On the other hand…Little Vegetarian Tommy hardly gets sick and when he does…responds well to antibiotics. 🙂 Just sayin!

So now YES we see that the antibiotics will be limited to…and I quote..”uses that prevent or treat animal illnesses.” So basically the antibiotics will still be used hmmm pretty much all the time.

  1. Invite 15 friends over.
  2. Spend a few days in a small closet
  3. Pee and Poo on the floor
  4. Then sleep in it
  5. Eat each other’s poo

On a positive note…if the antibiotics were lessened in terms of their use for growth…i guess that is a good thing. But how often are these factories checked…what happens if they are caught…is it a simple slap on the wrist? hmmmm

They Want to Limit the Antibiotics…

So I came across an article from The Associated Press about limiting the antibiotics in animals raised for their meat. Here is the link to the article…

They are basically saying in this article that the antibiotics that they pump into the animals may cause a health threat in the people who eat them. So now they say that the antibiotics being used should be monitored and administered by a Veterinarian. They speak of the danger that it causes for both humans AND THE animals. But first off, the amount of antibiotics used is just not needed if the factory farm industry wasnt so screwed up and heartless. They suggest that the antibiotics are only given when medically neccessary. But what is causing this necessity? Perhaps the filthy conditions that are created by the money hungry owners who do not care about the welfare of the animals? OR maybe they will convince whoever is in control of this that increasing the size of the animal is a “good medical reason.” I seriously wouldn’t put anything past this whole shady business.

But where is the “care” the people or animals? They are FINALLY realizing that the crazy amount of antibiotics MAY NOT BE THE BEST THING TO INGEST. Children are devoloping differently because of these drugs…who knows of the long term effects…and for what cost? More money in the pockets of heartless factory owners who SLAUGHTER, KILL, ABUSE…lives. Lives of beings on this Earth who FEEL…CRY…and DIE for their

Favorite Vegan Pancakes from Favorite Cookbook :)

Vegan cooking is surprisingly cheap and easy. Of course I am not making any of these recipes up but once you connect well with a Vegan Cookbook…it is all easy from there 🙂 My favorite cookbook right now is “Vegan with a Vengeance” by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. I love this book because this woman is very talented but she plays it off like Vegan Cooking is a no-brainer and all of her recipes are made from ingredients that you probably already have in your house. SUCH AS these pancakes that were so very effortless. I included a picture and here is the recipe: They are parents had them and didnt even comment on how they seemed Vegan..they were just downright good!

  • 1 and 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbs canola oil
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 cup soy milk or more depending on how thin you like the batter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbs Pure Maple Syrub (I used agave syrup but whatever floats your boat)

Oil and preheat your skillet for about 2 minutes. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. In separate bowl, combine all other ingredients. Adding wet ingredients to dry, mix until just combined.  Then cook the pancakes like you usually do and DONE!

Make them for a nice little sunday breakfast and add some fresh strawberries or berries and it is a great breakfast. For some protein I put some Natural Peanut Butter on them but that is just because I am addicted to Peanut Butter 🙂

Start of Juice Fast

I am beginning my 2 day Juice Fast and already it is proving to be a challenge. I woke up craving the cereal that I usually begin my day with…which is a healthy vegan option however I can’t have it for these 2 days. I had a bowl of mixed fruit and some water. I feel moody and overall bitchy. Everyone is annoying me and I have zero patience. I feel pretty lousy and my reactions seem to be delayed. I kind of feel as though I am dreaming and I am hearing and seeing things strangely. I have only been awake for a few hours and I am STARVING.  I am working 2 jobs today but have a short time to go home to make a fruit and veggie smoothie…I will include a picture of it and what I include when I make it.

So far this blows.

So if you are like me, you probably thought about going Vegan a few times in your life and perhaps conducted some research on the matter before deciding to make the transition. A lot of people ask me how I am getting b12 since it is only found in animal products and they warn me in that motherly way as if I am beginning some sort of drug habit. Sometimes I feel as though society feels like I am going down some dangerous path in life by cutting animal products out of my diet. So I decided to do my own research in order to argue back and most of all make sure that I am safe.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a Nutritionist…Dietitian..Doctor or anyone else authorized to give medical advice. Everything in this blog is my honest experience and a result from my own research using books and the internet. I reference everything and put it all in my own words and give credit when credit is due.

You can’t really stress about a vitamin that may be missing from your diet unless you know why you need it. Vitamin B12 is exclusively found in animal products and is a water soluble vitamin that is absorbed into the body to maintain nerve cells, make DNA, and cell division. You do not need to be a Doctor to realize that this vitamin is needed for survival. In contemporary diets…a deficiency is very rare since the body does a good job at storing enough B12 for a good amount of time.

But what happens if you do not ingest any foods with B12?

You can experience Anemia which has to do with your red blood cells. Overall, you feel weak, tired, you may have sore/bleeding gums, and you may have constipation or diarrhea.

So How Can I Prevent This!?!!?!?!?!

My personal suggestion is to take a B12 supplement. The recommended dosing for adults is 2.4 micrograms a day. Also keep in mind that plant based foods may not supply you with b12 EXCEPT for times that it is fortified with b12. Look for foods that are fortified with this vitamin. Also…many cereals are vegan and they have b12 in it. I have noticed that a lot of food meant for vegans and vegetarians are now being fortified with b12. So some meal alternatives will be…soy milk..etc. BUT just to be safe, I would take a supplement. It is not easy to overdose on this vitamin…our body only absorbs what it needs.

Let me know if you have any questions 🙂

Why are you Vegetarian? Why are you Vegan

The Lovely Cow I got to Meet 🙂

No matter what diet lifestyle you choose, I think it is important to observe within yourself the reason why you want to eat this way. There is always a reason, we never do much without having a reason behind it. Whether the reason is for weight loss, religion, ethics, or family…think about your reason. Without a reason that you are aware of and can embrace, I’ve noticed that it is easy to lose sight of your goals and passion within your lifestyle choice. Also it is pretty annoying when people ask you why you are eating a certain way and all you can do is grunt and mumble. I think that opens up the doors for them to pick on you because you seem weak to them. And for all of the Vegetarians and Vegans that are reading this right now, we all know how abundant negative comments are. Most of all, I think you need to be aware of this reason as a tool to help you during any times that you doubt your choices. A few years ago, I went on a fad diet in order to lose weight to fit into a dress…typical girl thing to do, I know :)…But I did not succeed with this for the entire time period because my reason was silly. So during times that i wanted a brownie, I caved because there was not much holding me back.

Personally, I love being a Vegetarian. I research the meat industry no matter how hard it may be to view the awful pictures/videos…I keep looking because it continually proves to me that I would NEVER want to support that lifestyle. In reality, our money supports companies the same way a donation may support a Breast Cancer Foundation. By paying our money into a company, we are saying “I support you and your actions and here is some money to help your business.” So by buying chicken I am basically saying, “Here is some money to kill more chicken and buy the equipment in order to do so…KILL KILL KILL!” And that is NOT WHAT I WANT TO SAY 🙂 One of the most common comments I receive from people who wonder why I am a Vegetarian…is this..”How is one person going to stop the meat industry and just one person going vegetarian is not going to cut down on their profits that much.” Well…when i was younger I would never be able to say much to this and it made me ponder myself about my choices. But pondering is always a good thing and I learned this…

  • It is the same thing with Presidential Elections. Every vote counts and if enough people thought this way, there would be hardly votes at all. So by being that “one person” you are threatening their profits in some way and by holding true to your reasons, may cause others in your social life to decrease their meat consumption.
  • Ethically consider if you could give money to a killer. Learn about the meat industry and the truth behind meat production and then as yourself if you want to help fund that. Your money adds up throughout the years and you may be giving them thousands of dollars.
  • At first, I started out as a “closet Vegetarain” and I would never discuss this lifestyle choice with anyone. I would just pick vegetarian meals and would not really discuss my reasons why. After embracing this lifestyle choice, I realized that by telling people factual information regarding my choice, it brings that knowledge to another person. That person can then make their own choice whether or not they want to go vegetarian and if the answer is YES VEGETARIAN!!!….then you know that your information helped guide that choice. So now that is TWO vegetarians. Two vegetarians talk to others and maybe get TWO MORE! and the chain continues 🙂

Have a wonderful day everyone and think about your choices 🙂
